Hair transplantation is a surgical procedure designed to address hair loss or thinning by transplanting hair follicles from one part of the body (usually the back or sides of the scalp) to areas with sparse or no hair. Hair transplantation is a popular and effective solution for individuals seeking to restore a fuller and natural-looking head of hair. Dr. McEwan works with a highly trained team with decades of experience with hair transplantation.
Dr. McEwan is directly involved in each step of the process to ensure that the end result is natural and in alignment with patient goals. Hair transplant is a successful and permanent solution for many individuals experiencing hair loss, providing natural-looking results and improved self-confidence.
Types of Hair Transplants:
Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT):
Procedure: In FUT, a strip of skin containing hair follicles is surgically removed from the donor area. The follicular units are then dissected and transplanted into the recipient site.
Scarring: FUT leaves a linear scar at the donor site, which can typically be concealed by surrounding hair. This type of hair transplantation may be best for patients who wear their hair slightly longer.
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE):
FUE involves individually harvesting hair follicles from the donor area using a small punch tool. These follicles are then transplanted into the recipient site. FUE results in tiny, dot-like scars scattered across the donor area, allowing for a much less noticeable appearance.
Recovery:
Patients may experience some swelling, redness, and scabbing in the recipient area, which usually resolves within a week.
Most individuals can resume regular activities within a few days, with full recovery typically taking a few weeks.
Results:
Hair transplant results are not immediate, and the transplanted hair initially falls out before new growth occurs.
Hair begins to regrow within a few months, and final results become noticeable within 6 to 12 months.
