A breast reduction, also known as reduction mammoplasty, is a cosmetic and functional surgical procedure designed to reshape and reduce the size of the breasts. During a breast reduction, excess breast tissue is removed and the skin is tightened to create a smaller, more youthful shape.
Why do women consider Breast Reduction?
Physical Discomfort: Breast reduction is often chosen by individuals experiencing physical discomfort, such as back pain, neck pain, or shoulder pain, due to the weight and size of their breasts.
Improved Quality of Life: The procedure can enhance overall well-being by addressing issues like difficulty finding well-fitting bras, skin irritation, low self-esteem related to having large breasts, and limitations in physical activities.
Breast Reduction Consultation:
· During your consultation we will have a thorough discussion regarding your concerns and goals of the surgery. Additionally, Dr. McEwan will review your overall health at length to ensure you are medically fit for the procedure. Patients who are actively smoking or otherwise consuming nicotine are not a candidate for the procedure until they stop using nicotine. If you are over 35 or have a strong family history or breast cancer, Dr. McEwan will request that you get a mammogram prior to surgery.
The Procedure:
· Breast reduction surgery is an outpatient procedure that usually takes about three hours. Afterwards, there is not a lot of care you have to do. It is important to wear a snug, underwire free sports bra all the time for two weeks after surgery. Most patients are able to return to normal day-to-day activity in 7-10 days. Heavy lifting and other strenuous activity should be avoided for about a month.
Results:
· Most patients notice an improvement in their neck and back pain within a day or two of surgery. It usually takes 1-2 weeks for the bruising to resolve. Most of the time, the swelling resolves in 4-6 weeks and the breasts take their final, improved, more youthful form. Many patients find that a breast reduction not only improves physical discomfort but also boosts their confidence and self-esteem.
