Please note revisionary breast surgery has a wide spectrum of complexity. Some cases are straightforward. Others are significantly more complex than the original surgery.
In it’s simplest definition revision breast surgery is undergoing another breast surgery in an effort to improve upon the result of the first surgery or address an issue that has arisen. In reality, it is wide spectrum of possible procedures and specific techniques that can be utilized to help improve things or address an issue. No two patients who undergo revisionary breast surgery are alike and neither should be their treatment plans. Dr. McEwan utilizes his broad training and nearly a decade of experience to identify the specific issues leading to dissatisfaction, develop a custom treatment plan, and execute that plan to give his patients the best chance he can give them to improve their result and satisfaction. Breast augmentation revision can be complicated and challenging. Some plastic surgeons won’t even consider performing it. Dr. McEwan is at a point in his career where he enjoys the challenge of these complicated cases.
Women who elect to undergo revisionary breast surgery often do so for many reasons. Here are some of the more common reasons we see:
Dissatisfaction with the size of previously placed implants
Unhappiness with the shape of previous placed implants
Implants in the wrong position
Visible rippling of the current implants
The nipple and areola are too low
Possible rupture of the current implants
Recurrent droop
Revisionary breast surgery also has many names. Revision breast augmentation, Revision mastopexy, Implant exchange, nipple repositioning, and implant repositioning are just a few that you will see.
Breast Revision Procedure:
Breast revision is typically performed under general anesthesia and takes a variable amount of time. More simple revisions can be done in an hour. Some take as long as 5 hours. Most of the time, it is an outpatient procedure and there is little medical care you have to do afterwards, but these facts depend on the specifics of the particular procedures being performed.
Breast Augmentation Revision Care and Recovery:
Initial Healing: Swelling and bruising are common initially but will subside over time.
Garments: You will need to wear a non-underwire, elastic bra (such as a sport’s bra) all the time after surgery for a couple weeks.
Resuming Activities: Most patients can return to normal activities within a week, though strenuous exercise may need to be avoided for at least a few weeks. A more conservative approach may be taken in those that undergo a significant revision.
Follow-up Appointments: Dr. McEwan sees his patients regularly throughout the postoperative period to ensure that you are healing appropriately.
Results:.
Size and shape: More simple revisions will notice their results soon after surgery. Those that undergo complex revisions generally develop more swelling and bruising. It can take 1-2 weeks for the bruises to resolve and 4-6 weeks for the swelling to go away. In these patients, it generally takes at least 3 months to see the final result
Boost in Confidence: Many patients experience increased self-confidence and satisfaction with their surgical results after having their revisionary surgery. Of course, this can never be guaranteed. During our initial consultation, Dr. McEwan will do his best to review what can be realistically expected from having revisionary surgery.
