Blepharoplasty, commonly known as eyelid surgery, is a cosmetic procedure aimed at rejuvenating the appearance of the eyes by addressing sagging skin, excess fat, and muscle laxity around the eyelids. Blepharoplasty is a popular and effective option for those looking to achieve a more youthful and revitalized appearance around the eyes.
This surgical intervention can be performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both, depending on the individual's concerns and goals. Dr. McEwan has undergone extensive highly specialized training in surgery of the eyelid to help her patients achieve the best result possible.
Upper Blepharoplasty:
Procedure: During upper blepharoplasty, an incision is typically made along the natural crease of the upper eyelid. Excess skin and, if necessary, a portion of underlying muscle and fat are removed to create a more youthful and refreshed appearance.
Candidates: Individuals with drooping upper eyelids that may impair vision or contribute to a tired and aged look often opt for upper blepharoplasty.
Lower Blepharoplasty:
Procedure: Individuals with under-eye bags, dark circles, or loose skin in the lower eyelid area may benefit from lower blepharoplasty. Lower blepharoplasty involves addressing puffiness, wrinkles, and sagging skin in the lower eyelid region. Dr. McEwan creates an incision within the lower eyelid (transconjunctival approach) to remove or reposition excess fat and tighten the surrounding tissues. Lower blepharoplasty is often combined with repositioning of the lower eyelid fat or fat transfer to improve the overall contour of the lower lids.
Combined Blepharoplasty:
Individuals seeking overall improvement in the appearance of both upper and lower eyelids may choose combined blepharoplasty. Some patients choose to undergo both upper and lower blepharoplasty in a single surgical session to achieve comprehensive eyelid rejuvenation. The surgical techniques are essentially the same and are tailored to your specific areas of concern.
Recovery:
Following blepharoplasty, patients may experience temporary bruising, swelling, and discomfort, which typically subside within a few weeks.
