Otoplasty, commonly referred to as ear surgery or ear pinning, is a cosmetic procedure designed to reshape and reposition the ears for a more balanced and aesthetically pleasing appearance.
This surgical intervention is often sought by individuals who are self-conscious about the size, shape, or protrusion of their ears. Otoplasty can help restore a natural appearance to the ears and improve self esteem and confidence.
Otoplasty is commonly performed on children, but it can be done at any age once the ears have reached their full size.
Procedure:
Otoplasty is typically performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, depending on the complexity of the procedure and patient preference. Dr. McEwan performs otoplasty by making small incisions behind the ears, strategically placed in the natural creases to minimize visible scarring. The surgeon may reshape the cartilage of the ears, repositioning them closer to the head if they protrude excessively. Sutures are used to secure the new shape. Once the desired changes are made, the incisions are closed with sutures.
Recovery:
Patients may experience some swelling and discomfort in the first few days after surgery.
A headband or bandages are often worn to support the ears in their new position during the initial healing phase.
Most individuals can resume normal activities within a week, but strenuous activities should be avoided for a few weeks.
Results:
The results of otoplasty are visible once the initial swelling subsides, revealing a more proportionate and aesthetically pleasing ear shape.
Otoplasty provides long-lasting results, and the improved ear appearance is generally permanent.
